26 MAY 2014: THE OLYMPIC TORCH OF THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN ST MARK’S SQUARE

The Special Olympics is the most widespread programme in the world of sports activities for people with mental disabilities. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy, JFK’s sister, the movement is officially recognised by the International Olympics Committee. It now involves about 4,205,630 athletes in 170 countries. Venice is hosting the 30th Summer National Games from 26 to 30 May 2014. In particular, the Olympic torch will make several stops in the Veneto provinces before reaching St Mark’s Square on the evening of the opening ceremony for the lighting of the tripod. A stirring and festive moment that will enliven the most beautiful square in the world! The Associazione Piazza San Marco enthusiastically greets all the athletes competing!
