ENGINEER HERMES REDI (CVN): WE CAN ALSO CLOSE THE MOSE BARRIERS WITH 90 CM TIDES

During the visit of the IV and IX Commissioni Consiliari Comunali to the Consorzio Venezia Nuova (CVN) last Friday, CVN’s technical director, the engineer Redi (in photo), replying to a specific question from the president of the IX Commissione, Paolo Pellegrini, on the possibility of closing the Mose barriers with tides of less than the agreed 110 cm to protect the lower parts of the city, primarily St Mark’s Square, said that it is possible to go down as far as 90 cm. This is important news. Mr Redi pointed out that the threshold can be lowered as the technical procedure is quite viable. This decision, if shared by the various institutions and authorities, could at least partly meet the requests of the Associazione Piazza San Marco, which recently wrote and circulated to the media a bulky dossier on the problem of the medium-high tides that flood the Square. Awaiting the work to waterproof the Square, approved but not carried out due to a lack of finance, a decision such as this could open up some glimmer of hope for safeguarding this inestimable monument.
