FIRST HIGH WATER OF THE SEASON IN ST MARK’S SQUARE

On Wednesday 8 October St Mark’s Square was partly submerged by the high tide: 91 cm above the average sea level was enough to submerge part of the Square and the Procuratie Vecchie. This first event marks the arrival of autumn, the season when the high tides normally occur. It did not make the news as it was considered ‘code yellow’, the first level of alarm, but was enough to cause difficulties in the Square, especially for businesses in the Procuratie Vecchie. So the Associazione Piazza San Marco wants to recall and point out that these events, which have been repeating with greater frequency in recent years, are also the cause of difficulties, demanding urgent local works in the St Mark’s area to also defend against medium-low high tides.
