IN ST MARK’S SQUARE TO DEMAND THE TRUTH ON THE REGENI CASE

We have written and repeated it several times: St Mark’s Square is not only the heart of Venice but is part of the world heritage and, in the collective imagination, a ‘symbol place’ where important moments of political, social and civil engagement have been written that may remain in history. So a diverse number of city councillors of various political persuasion met yesterday morning in St Mark’s Square behind a banner with the words: ‘Verità per Giulio Regeni” (Truth for Giulio Regeni) (photo) to demand the unravelling of the many mysteries surrounding the death of the young Italian researcher in Egypt. The campaign launched by Amnesty International thus found warm support in the Venetian institutions, confirmed by the chairman of the city council, Linda Damiano: ‘It is a campaign supported by the entire council; we ask for the rightful truth and closer investigations for this young man who tragically lost his life’.
