INCREASED CHECKS ON ILLEGAL SELLERS IN THE OLD CITY CENTRE AND THE ST MARK’S AREA

The provincial committee for order and security decided in yesterday’s meeting at the prefecture to act with more checks on the illegal sellers of various goods that crowd the city centre and the St Mark’s area. It is a decision that has been awaited for some time after various reports made from several sources, including the Associazione Piazza San Marco, on the spread of illegal trade and aggression towards tourists and police by the sellers themselves. So it is a situation that has several times already degenerated into problems of public order and required rapid intervention. In addition, with the assistance of Venice University, a powerful information campaign will be launched to sensitise tourists, asking them not to buy the goods on sale, which are clearly fakes. The next step will be fines, although in this case it is worth pointing out that in previous years such sanctions never had any major results in prevention and never definitively removed the illegal sellers from the Square or the entire St Mark’s area.
