SEAGULL PROBLEM, LIPU ALSO THINKS PROMPT ACTION IS NECESSARY

The environmental association LIPU points out, as the Associazione Piazza San Marco has already done several times, that we are faced with an invasion of herring gulls in the St Mark’s area and in Venice generally. Speaking to the Nuova Venezia journalist Simone Bianchi, Gianpaolo Pamio (in photo), LIPU director for Venice, notes that ‘the abundance of food available has attracted this species in an anomalous way’. Pamio also considers the question with regard to St Mark’s Square: ‘as long as there are tourists who feed them in the Square, these seagulls will naturally go in search of it, because they are wrongly accustomed to it’. Furthermore, says Pamio, the collection of rubbish would need to be reorganised to take on the problem seriously, an aspect that the Associazione Piazza San Marco agrees with, as known.
