TOO MUCH TOURISM, VENICE AT RISK UNESCO!

Only yesterday the Gazzettino dossier on St Mark’s Square and its basilica full of rubbish went around the world. There have been many, also international, comments on the question that the Associazione Piazza San Marco has been denouncing for years. The national daily Libero today also strengthened the dose speaking of a ‘St Mark’s square reduced to a dump: the Venetians rebel’, and quoting the words of Alberto Nardi, chairman of the association, regarding the uncontrolled, low-level, mass tourism that brings little to the city. And it is also today’s news that Unesco has given an ultimatum to Venice and Italy: seven months or the city will be listed among the world sites at risk. The international organisation calls for urgent action on water traffic, major projects and especially tourist control, matters often also brought to the forefront by the Associazione Piazza San Marco, which has long been urging the institutions to make clear and courageous decisions.
