FIRST DAYS OF WORK FOR THE ‘SAN MARCO GUARDIANS’

The first days of work for the ‘San Marco Guardians’ who have once again this year from 21 May begun keeping watch over St Mark’s Square and informing tourists on how to properly ‘experience’ this extraordinary historical site. These men and women, who speak several languages and are almost all Venetians, work shifts every day in teams of four from 10 am to 7.30pm and try, with no little difficulty, to maintain decorum in the St Mark’s area with plenty of smiles and courtesy. Their presence is also a deterrent to illegal hawkers, also of corn, who have unfortunately for some time been active in the Square. We note that this initiative, which will continue until 20 October, was strongly encouraged by the Associazione Piazza San Marco in association with the Comune di Venezia and is sponsored by Costa Crociere.
