NEW CULTURAL ITINERARY AT THE DOGE’S PALACE IN ST MARK’S SQUARE

The St Mark’s area is enriched with a new cultural itinerary. From tomorrow, Monday 22 July, visits will begin to the ‘Secret Itineraries’ of the Doge’s Palace in St Mark’s Square. A small door in the courtyard of the Doge’s Palace gives access to the gloomy and fairly damp cells of the Wells, which housed various prisoners. The pathway, which has just been put into order and brought into compliance with regulations, winds through various rooms to the torture room and the famous ‘Leads’, cells beneath the roof of the Doge’s Palace lined with sheets of lead and reserved for political prisoners. It is an evocative and intriguing tour that enriches the cultural offering in the St Mark’s area. Bookings are required, through the call centre at 848082000. In addition, still on the subject of the cultural offer and taking up a previous news item, the agreement between Venice and the Hermitage State Museum has now been officially signed in St Petersburg: the ‘Ermitage Italia’ scientific and cultural centre will open in the Procuratie Vecchie in Venice.
