ST MARK’S BELL TOWER BLOCKED OFF

Just renovated and the building site cleared away, St Mark’s Bell Tower is once again the subject of discussion. Yesterday some pieces of masonry fell from the bell tower close to Vela’s notorious and much contested ‘Venice Official Store’ due to the bad weather in recent days. The area was immediately blocked off to prevent any nasty incidents and the fire brigade also checked the area. As noted in a previous article, work has begun to gradually move the ‘shed’ placed beneath the bell tower to the porticoes of the Doge’s Palace. It will be sited near the entrance to the Manet exhibition, which moreover has attracted many visitors. The ‘shed’ will be entirely dismantled over the next few days and only a small part of it moved, to the relief of all: creators and opponents.
