ST MARK’S SQUARE FORTIFIED FOR THE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR FESTIVITIES
The umpteenth terrorist attack that hit Berlin in these days has led to an increase in security and checks in many Italian cities, as reported by all the local and national newspapers. Venice is one of these and has been ‘under protection’ since the French attacks. The authorities responsible have decided to further reinforce the presence of the forces of order in the city, especially at Rialto and in St Mark’s Square, for the forthcoming festivities and following the terrible attack in the German capital. The Square will once again be under close surveillance, especially on the occasion of the traditional mass in the basilica planned for Christmas Eve. In addition, checks will be reinforced for the end of the year, when Venice and especially St Mark’s Square will be invaded by the 80,000 people (these are the forecasts made by the experts) who decide to see in the new year in Venice watching the fireworks display planned for St Mark’s Basin.
