THE PAVING SLABS IN THE ST MARK’S AREA ARE IN TOTAL DISREPAIR

After the Gazzettino, the other local paper ‘La Nuova Venezia’ has now also written on the problem of the disrepair in the St Mark’s area. It did so with an article by Enrico Tantucci in the 30 March 2013 edition in which the journalist pointed out that ‘the paving in St Mark’s Square’ is ‘a colander’. A situation that deteriorates every day. And ‘non-existent funds and resources would be needed’ to stop it. A serious situation, writes Tantucci, especially for the 18th-century slabs in the Square. The paving, designed by Andrea Tirali, is damaged in many places and there are various areas of sagging, especially near the Napoleonic Wing, the part used most often to erect the stages for shows. The high tides also play a part by flooding the Square more than a hundred times a year, eroding the slabs and causing the sagging. Tantucci’s report is nothing new for the Associazione San Marco, which has for years been making the public and the institutions aware of the need to carry our urgent maintenance on the St Mark’s area and to plan works aimed at protecting the Square from high tides, including medium-low ones.
