TWO ITEMS OF GOOD NEWS FOR ST MARK’S SQUARE

Good news for St Mark’s Square and its cultural assets. The Palazzo della Zecca, the 16th-century building facing the quay that was built to a design by Jacopo Sansovino and is now part of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, has for some days now finally been freed of its covering of scaffolding and advertising hoarding. Satisfaction was expressed by the Associazione Piazza San Marco, which has spoken out several times over recent months on the intrusiveness of the hoardings. Other positive news comes from the Doge’s Palace, where the doges’ historic home finally gets its chapel back. The Chiesetta del Doge, located on the third floor of the palace beside the Senate chamber, has been restored and returned to its ancient splendour after years of work. So two important items of news for the entire St Mark’s area.
